Call for papers: "How are the ‘modern’ Middle Ages created or Medievalism Studies"

Centre for Medieval Studies of Higher School of Economics and academic e-journal Vox medii aevi are pleased to announce an international conference "How are the ‘modern’ Middle Ages created or Medievalism Studies" that will take place in Moscow, Russia on May 29-30, 2019.

Each society holds the images of the past in its language and culture. These images are constructed and interpreted not only by the professionals (such as historians) but also by artists, journalists, and profanes. All these ways of turning back to the past are closely related to the self-perception of the individuals. One can express his or her perception of the modernity and his hopes concerning the future by comparing him or herself to the past – beautiful or disgusting and by its appropriation or rejection.
Modern Western Europe has always compared itself to the previous ages, i.e. with the Middle Ages. Humanists and antiquarians, Catholics and Protestants, classicists and romanticists have all invented their own Middle Ages. The images and conceptions born in these polemics are still alive; moreover, the word "medieval" itself became a common noun in many European languages. The general notion of western European Middle ages is an integral part of modern culture in different regions, usually intermingled with the images of the local historical memory.
We invite to discuss the Middle Ages after the Middle Ages, the diversity of its images in art, philosophy, publicism, academic and popular culture.
We welcome submissions including, but not limited to:
> Evolution of the concept of the Middle ages in Academia, literature and art of XVI-XXI cc.;
> Middle Ages in popular culture of XX-XXI cc.;
> Construction of the image of the Middle Ages in school and university teaching;
> practices of the reconstruction of the Middle Ages: theatre, music, dancing, cuisine and tournaments;
> Medievalism in Russia: images of "foreign" and "local" Middle ages;
> The notion of the Middle ages in politology, sociology and economics; references to the Middle Ages in modern political discourse.
Papers may be submitted in either English, German, French or Russian. Please, send title and abstract of approx. 250 words to Svetlana Yatsyk (syatsyk@hse.ru) or Alexander Rusanov (arusanov@hse.ru) no later than May 1, 2019. All submissions should include the title of the paper, as well as the author's name, institutional affiliation, and contact information. Chosen participants will be notified by e-mail no later than May 10th 2019. Presenters should plan to deliver their papers in an approx — 20-minute oral presentation. The articles based on the presented papers will be published in a special volume of Vox medii aevi.
